Walking Tours

The Native Natural History Walking Tour begins at your ship's lightering facility, where your Alaska Host Certified guide will take you to a variety of places in the downtown Sitka area. You will explore Sitka's historical sites; learn about Native natural history and Tlingit Culture.

Visit the Sheet'ka Kwaán Naa Kahídi, continue past downtown Sitka's historic sights, through the Sheldon Jackson College Marine Science Facility and conclude with a nature walk through Sitka National Historic Park.

First you will visit the Sheet'ka Kwaán Naa Kahídi, a traditional-style Tlingit Clan house. Inside, you will see the massive beams, tiered seating, center fire pit, and the largest hand-carved house screen in the Pacific Northwest.

Continue along Lincoln Street, past downtown's many historical sights while your guide introduces you to the local native culture and history along with how the environment played a fundamental role in Tlingit Culture and survival.

Explore Sheldon Jackson College's Marine Science Facility, located in the Sage Building. Inside, walk through a variety of aquarium displays and a "touch tank" that fascinates even the youngest of visitors.

At Sitka National Historical Park, your guide will explore various topics including: rainforest environment, totem significance, traditional edible and medicinal plants, and natural resources of the rainforest used by the Tlingit people in art and daily living.

The walk will head back toward town along the historic sites and conclude at Crescent Harbor lightering facility. As a participant, you will receive admission into the Sheldon Jackson College Marine Science Facility, a disposable poncho (in adverse weather) and a one-way transit pass from Sitka National Historical Park to Town if you choose not to walk back.
